Setting goals is important because it gives you direction, allows you to make and track your progress and get closer to your bigger life goals and aims. This is why, having business goals is necessary for your business to succeed and for you to achieve the big aim you set for your business: growth, to make an impact, build it and sell it. A successful business is only achieved through successful goals so in this post I will be sharing with you five ways in which you can make your business goals a success.

1. Identify What Stage of Business You are at
Depending on the stage your business is at the goals you choose will vary. If you are just starting out then your goals will be more aligned with getting brand exposure and creating content so you can be visible to your audience and gain their trust. In the starting out phase you are looking to create those relationships, build trust, get your brand more visible and test out your product by trying to get those first couple of sales and reviews.
If the stage of your business is where you want to take the next step to transform your business, so this can be transitioning into a different service / product your company offers or adding more elements to your business or adding more team members to your business to increase your capacity to bring in more sales and support the growth of the business.
The phase and stage your business is at will require a different set of goals to help it move to the next level or closer to your bigger aim / goal. So, before you set your goals make sure you take the time to review where your business currently stands and where you want it to be. This will help you define those successful goals so you can make your business successful.
2. Be Aware of Your Constraints
Along with reviewing where your business currently is at you also need to review your access to resources. So, this can be: time, money, knowledge, skills. These are the things you need for a business to be successful therefore you need to have a look at if the goals you are setting are not suitable because you have these constraints for example, you want to grow your business by offering another service but you need to check if you have the time capacity and the skills required.
If the goals you are setting are too ambitious or are outside of these constraints then your first priority should be to address these constraints so for knowledge and skills you can look at putting time towards increasing your knowledge, growing your expertise and practicing the skill you want to offer to your customers. Once you identify and address these constraints you'll be able to set the goals that will be relevant for you.
3. Make them Attainable
The first two points lead into this one, if you are not taking into consideration the stage your business is in and what constraints you have then the goals you set will be too far out of reach and not ones you will be able to successfully achieve, thus leading to your business not to be successful. This is not to say that your goals should not be ambitious, they should but they need to be realistic and attainable. Your business goals need to be milestones that you need to meet, they should be big so that you can challenge yourself but they also need to be in bound of those constraints and be in line with your business state.
Check your goals to see if they are possible and if they are not then what is it that makes them beyond reach - this will allow you to set goals so you can move towards that goal by addressing the obstacles in your way.
4. Align Actions to Your Goals
A popular acronym for when it comes to goal setting is: SMART, the A stands for attainable. The way that I see the A is that for goals to be attainable there need to be clear actions that guide and pave the way to success of that goal. To achieve a goal we need to define the steps we want to take to make it to that goal. These steps will be the actions you are going to take so you can reach your business goal.
For every business goal you set, write down 3-5 actions that you will take in line with the goal so that you can achieve and attain it. The actions will also make sure that you are taking action on your goal, sometimes we can set goals but we are afraid or for another reason do not really take action that move us towards that goal.
Defining the actions will mean that you will be likely to take them because they will be what you need to do in order to attain the goal. Setting actions against your goal is a brilliant way to make sure your goals are successful which in turn makes your business successful.
5. Have Your Goals Constantly in front of You
Many times I've set goals for my business and I end up forgetting them and not sticking to them, then I come back and set new ones because I did not stick to the old ones. The cycle repeats itself and nothing ever gets accomplished. To break this cycle and make it easier for myself to achieve my goals and succeed in my business I decided to constantly have my goals with me. I took a picture of the goals I set and view them to remind me of the actions that were aligned to those goals I had committed to taking. This keeps me guided on what I need to be doing so I can get on and do it.
You can try different methods of having your goals in front of you to remind you of what your focus is and what you need to be doing. Reminding yourself of your goals is an excellent way to keep yourself on track and to check with yourself that what you're doing in your business is in line with what you want to achieve. We can end up doing things in our business which can take us away from the things that are impactful and cause our business to move forward.
One way which I recommend for you to remind you of your goals and ensure the actions you are taking are actually moving your business forward and are having an impact is to use the Weekly Business Review Printables below:
This weekly business review helps you to check in with yourself on what you are doing in your business and if the actions you are taking are in line with your goals, priorities and are making a positive difference to your business.
